Attack on Titan’s creator estimates manga will end in three years

AT 4

There are a lot of questions fans of anime and manga mega-hit Attack on Titan want the answers to. Where did the series’ naked, man-eating giants come from? What did protagonist Eren’s father hide away in the locked cellar he gave his son the key to? And when are we going to see the next portion of the story adapted to animation (in more specific terms than “eventually”)?

But series creator Hajime Isayama did reveal something a lot of fans want to know, as he recently told reporters his personal estimate as to when Attack on Titan’s manga serialization will end.

Isayama recently spoke with reporters from Japanese culture magazine Da Vinci, as part of the Attack on Titan spotlight planned for the publication’s October issue, The series is Isayama’s first long-running serial, and the artist has been at it since 2009. With new installments appearing every month in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, Isayama has now penned 61 chapters, which have been collected into 14 volumes.

AT 2

Of course, the sky’s the limit on manga longevity. After all, pirate saga One Piece now has 75 collected volumes, and police gag story <em<Kochikame is up to 191, thanks to it being continually published since 1976. Should Attack on Titan’s readers brace themselves for a similarly long ride?

No, at least not according to Isayama. “In the beginning, I estimated I’d need about 16 volumes to wrap everything up,” he explains. “But there are more characters involved now, and to do the story justice, it’s going to need to be more longer than that…If each character doesn’t change into someone different between the start and end, then I don’t think there’s any point to a story, so I want to show readers the moment when they change.”

Personally, I think the manga will continue for three more years. I’d like to end things quickly, with a tight pace of story developments…and then I always end up feeling like I should qualify that with a ‘but,’ so for now, I can’t say anything more specific.”

AT 3

As an example of a character arc, Isayama spoke more about Eren. “In the beginning, his character was more symbolic, so I sometimes didn’t know what to do with him. But then I heard Yuki Kaiji’s performance as him in the anime, and I started to think, ‘Ah, this is how Eren is.’ There’s a bit of weakness in his voice, with the nuance that he’s forcing himself to be stronger than he really is. It’s brave, bur deep inside, he’s bluffing as hard as he can, which is something I started to better understand as the manga went on.”

With three years to go before the finale, those looking to get a hint of what’s in store for Attack on Titan’s cast might want to check out a musical recommendation from Isayama. “I love Rhymester’s ‘Prisoner No. 1, 2, 3,'” he says, referring to a jazzy song by the Japanese hip-hop trio. “They sing about three people being held prisoner, and their different ways of thinking. It’s just like the Survey Corps, Garrison Regiment, and Military Police Brigade from Attack on Titan. It wouldn’t be going too far to say the song is about the manga’s story.”

AT 1

Isayama says he’s especially fond of this kind of intellectual categorizing. “There are people who try to use existing systems for their own purposes, and others who stand against that. Most people, though, fall somewhere in between, sitting on the fence and waiting for an opportunity.”

Just like the legions of Attack on Titan fans waiting to see what happens next.

2014.10.05 attack on titan posters

If you’re a fan of the wildly popular manga and anime series Attack on Titan, then you’ll be more than familiar with the violent and jarring scenes of gigantic monsters biting off and chewing human heads, arms and various other body parts. But while you might expect such gruesome images in your comic books, commuters riding the Tokyo subway might not appreciate seeing such gory poster images on their way to work every morning.

So when advertising a new Attack on Titan exhibit opening next month at a Tokyo museum, the poster designers decided to creatively self-censor their own work with some very cleverly placed food items.

The digital artwork will show up starting October 6 and will be on display for about a week inside the Roppongi subway station. Instead of the normal diet of people, the titans on the “self-censored” posters are eating various fast food options like friend chicken or hamburgers. Although some may argue about the health effects of a human-based versus fast food-based diet, advertisers probably thought the latter would be a bit easier for commuters to “swallow.”

▼ Do you know how many grams of cholesterol is in that hamburger Mr. Titan?

The Attack on Titan exhibit opens next month at the Ueno Royal Museum and runs through January next year. Besides images, artwork and an exclusive short film, visitors will be able to experience the true terror of a titan through a special part of the exhibit using the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. The simulation will make participants feel like they have come face to face with one of the man-eating titans.

This exhibit and self-censoring posters just adds to the excitement for Attack on Titan fans as the first part of a two-part movie will be coming out next month. And later next year, the second film will hit theaters and star the dreamy Haruma Miura as the angtsy protagonist Eren Yeager.

Need any more reasons to get excited about the upcoming Attack on Titan exhibit? Check out two of the TV ads below and let us know in the comments below if you happen to see the fast food eating-titans in Tokyo!

Is Attack on Titan’s Armin actually a girl? The series’ creator seems to think so!

AW 3

Producers sometimes run into a tricky problem when picking voice actors to portray anime characters: In the case of a teen boy, is it better to cast a man or a woman to play the part?

Especially if the character isn’t a particularly macho lad, and if the production committee is thinking long-term, such roles are often given to women. The rationale is that an adult man would sound too old, and an adolescent actor’s voice will change once he hits puberty. In fact, some of anime’s most famous male characters, such as Dragon Ball Z’s Goku, Evangelion’s Shinji, and Rurouni Kenshin’s Kenshin are all played by women.

Until now we’d have been confident in adding Attack on Titan’s blond and gentle Armin to the list, as the supposedly male friend of protagonist Eren is voiced by Ms. Marina Inoue. But is Amrin actually a guy? Maybe not, and the source of the rumor looks to be none other than Attack on Titan creator Hajime Isayama himself.

A photo, originally attributed to Twitter user Futomayu, has been making the rounds online in Japan. The snapshot looks to be of a question-and-answer column in which fans could ask Isayama what they wanted to know about his hugely successful anime and manga franchise.

One question came from a Saitama Prefecture resident going by the name Hello Again, who was curious about the always professional Mikasa.

▼ Mikasa, ready to go to work killing Titans

AW 1

Mikasa isn’t just cool in the sense that she takes down her giant foes without showing a trace of fear, though. She’s also a bit standoffish and intimidating, which got Hello Again wondering about the kind of relationships she’d formed with her comrades in the 104th Training Corps graduating class. “Out of the girls in the 104th, who is Mikasa closest friends with?” the fan asked.

Isayama’s terse response?

“That’d be Armin.”

AW 2

Internet commenters had the following reactions:

“I knew it.”
“So, does this mean Eren and Armin can hook up?”
“The fujoshi must be crying.”
“Isn’t his gender ‘Armin?’”

Isayama didn’t go into any greater detail, and some fans aren’t sure whether he’s being serious or just showing off a deadpan sense of humor. Given how many other characters in Attack on Titan are harboring startling secrets and hidden identities, though, we can’t just dismiss the possibility outright that Armin is actually a woman.

For that matter, off the top of our heads, we can’t recall a point in the series when Armin directly refers to himself as a guy, although there’s a possibility we’ve just forgotten. Maybe it’s time to take on the solemn and difficult task of rewatching every episode of the hottest anime series in the last 20 years. You know, for research purposes.

MG 4

Last January, fans got hit with a mix of awe and envy at an Attack on Titan event in Osaka where the heroes’ 3-D maneuver gear was on display. Looking over the intricate harness and paired swords, it was hard not to find yourself wanting a set of your very own.

Soon enough, that anime daydream can come true, as preorders have now started for life-size replicas of Attack on Titan’s iconic giant-killing battlefield technology.

The colossal cosplay bundle is crafted by Movic, the same veteran merchandising company behind the 3-D maneuver gear shown in Osaka (and also the elegant Japanese-style Pokémon artwork we’ve been eyeing for our bare living room walls). At 99,800 yen (US $915), Movic is asking for a serious hunk of change, but it’s offering a serious hunk of awesomeness in return.

MG 1

The kit, made out of aluminum, ABS plastic, and silicon, looks to include all the accouterments of the anime design, including two gun grip-mounted blades. Movic’s even sent out a couple of teaser photos of the rig being modeled, in order to help fans get over the high wall its price point constitutes.

MG 2

MG 3

The 3-D maneuver gear can be ordered directly from Movic here, with delivery scheduled for late January of 2015. While that won’t be soon enough for this coming Halloween, it should still arrive in plenty of time for next summer’s anime convention season, and you can spend the time until then working out so you can move around with 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of Attack on Titan love strapped to your hips.

Anime pregnancy tests: The latest otaku meme, and it’s not just for 2-D girls

$

AP 3

Back when Japan was still at the mercy of the midsummer heat, a group of…creative anime fans tried to cool off with bowls of shaved ice. Ordinarily that wouldn’t be so weird, except that they set up their strawberry syrup dispenser to look like their treats were being flavored by an anime girl’s menstrual flow. (Yeah, gross.)

But hey, what’s the alternative to anime fans getting excited over 2-D characters having their periods? Anime fans getting excited about 2-D characters not having periods! Otaku around Japan have been sharing retouched pics of animation stars showing off pregnancy test results, and the trend isn’t limited to anime’s ladies.

It doesn’t take a whole lot of artistic skill to get in on the action. All you need is this started image of a hand pointing to a pregnancy test indicating a positive result.

AP 1

Next, grab a picture that conveys the emotion you’ve always assumed the character would respond with when finding out there’s a tiny life growing inside her.

AP 2

Now, overlay the first picture onto the second, and you’re all done.

Love Live! idol Eri does not look like she was expecting this.

AP 3

Given the relatively young ages of anime heroines, the predictable result of the trend has been a rash of teen pregnancies.

Chunibyo’s Sanae is understandably overwhelmed, given that she’s supposed to be in the ninth grade.

Some of anime’s tougher women, though, are less distraught. Kurumi from Date A Live seems to be taking the news of her impending motherhood with more aplomb, as you’d expect from a super-powered killing machine.

Likewise, Jormungand’s gun-running protagonist Koko seems unfazed.

▼ We think Attack on Titan’s Annie is happy, but it’s always tough to tell what’s going on in that girl’s head.

If you’re more into manga than anime, you’ll need to convert the hands and pregnancy test to black and white, but otherwise the process is the same.

The Love Live! cast seems to be especially sexually active, as we see two of Eri’s bandmates are also expecting.

The family tree of the A Certain Magical Index/A Certain Scientific Railgun franchise is also set to grow by three.

Of course, the anime medium means creators aren’t bound by the rules of reality. For example, here’s Dragon Ball Z’s Vegeta exclaiming “Fun time bingo!” as he points to the proof that he, too, is pregnant.

Gundam Unicorn villain Full Frontal, on the other hand, has a much more stoic reaction.

▼ Really, when you get stuck with the name Full Frontal, it’s pretty hard for anything to shock you after that.

Recently, there’s been a surge in popularity of shows about high school boys’ athletics. At least a part of their success is from fans who enjoy watching the guys get all hot and sweaty, and hopefully someday pregnant, it seems. Nagisa and Rin from Free!, for example, might both have to skip swimming practice for Lamaze class in the not-too-distant future.

The volleyball games of Haikyu!! look to be down two competitors as well.

And finally, road bike racing anime Yowamushi Pedal takes the men’s crown with three male pregnancies.

Geez, someone should really remind those guys about taking their birth-control pills.

The Simpsons Halloween episode pays tribute to popular anime

Screen Shot 2014-10-20 at 1.28.44 PM

The Simpsons had some fun last night in their “Treehouse of Horror XXV” Halloween episode, imagining a world where multiple incarnations of the Simpsons family has been created by an evil marketing entity.

Amongst them was a tribute to some popular anime titles, including Attack on Titan, NarutoPokémon, Bleach, One Piece, and Spirited Away.

The episode went on to pay homage to Adventure Time, Archer, Despicable Me, and more.

If you want to see the full episode in its entirety, you can catch it on Hulu next week, or watch it now with Hulu+.

Earlier in the year, The Simpsons also made a nod towards the works of director Hayao Miyazaki.

Do you enjoy pirated anime and manga? If so, this “thank you” is not for you

While the Japanese economy is powered by numerous exports and industries, from cars to computers, perhaps one of its largest, if not most visible, industries is that of entertainment content such as anime, manga and video games. While we all love good content–it is, after all, king–not everyone is necessarily willing or able to pay for it. While in days of yore that mostly meant simply going without the latest publication of your favorite manga, today’s high-speed Internet has made, shall we say acquiring content easier than ever.

While countries around the world debate the issues of online piracy, free speech, and copyright law, Japan is taking a somewhat more aggressive stance (anti-piracy even has its own figures in Japan!). Nevertheless, stopping piracy completely is an exercise in futility, which is probably why the M.A.G. (Manga-Anime Guardians) Project is aimed more at changing hearts and minds than using legal action to stop those pesky pirates. In fact, they’ll even give you a special-edition illustration if you join!

▼”To all of you who love manga and anime…”

Mag_Vid

Let’s be honest for a second: Piracy happens. It’s not really a good thing, but it’s not going to disappear ever (probably). It would be great if every content creator got all the money they deserve, but it would also be great if we all had prehensile tails. Still, we do not, in any way, want to support piracy–but we’re not sure that the Manga-Anime Guardians Project will be much more effective than D.A.R.E.

  • Triangles: making things official

So, just what is the M.A.G. Project? Well, think of it like a purity ring for piracy–something you promise not to do after getting a bit of a lecture on its evils. The ultimate goal of the project seems to be ending piracy and promoting the use of official, usually paid, sources. The website doesn’t seem to mention much in the way of practical action–it’s more about “thanking” fans who acquire their manga/anime fix through legitimate channels. It does have this nifty image though:

▼Nothing says official like triangles!

MAG

  • Scary numbers

The M.A.G. Project also offers some alarming statistics that should make you think twice about firing up BitTorrent and grabbing the most recent episode of Attack on Titan. For example, the English version of the site reports the following.

“Regrettably, according to a report of Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan, a huge number of Manga and Anime fans, over 50% of them in U.S. and 12% in Japan, are watching or reading pirated works.

The estimated cost of damage from online piracy is as much as JPY 2 trillion (approximately US$20 billion). Beside, a report of Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan indicates that in major cities of China (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chongqing) the damage cost to Japanese contents is JPY 560 billion (approximately US$5.6 billion) per year.”

As part of their thank you to non-pirate fans, they’re produced this (hopefully) non-copyright-violating video of various characters saying “arigatou.”

▼For subtitles, click the little white box with lines at the bottom of the player once it starts.

  • Free stuff

They’re also running a “join” campaign to get people to promote awareness and the enjoyment of official manga and anime. If you join, you can even get a free download of the special-edition illustration below.

mag_join

As you can see, they’ve successfully gotten over a million people to click the join button–including us! Aside from getting a zip file (which we didn’t open with an expired version of WinRAR, thank you very much!), not much happened except the counter going up a tick and a request to share the site on the social network of our choice.

▼Here are all the characters included in the illustration.

mag_join2

  • An own goal?

The site does have one very practical link, though. If you’re feeling motivated to only get your manga and anime online officially, the M.A.G. Project suggests you check out Manga-Anime Here. The site very simply provides links to official sources for your reading/viewing pleasure in both Japanese and English.

Unfortunately, it looks like most of the links are for sites that are region-locked to either the US or Japan, which leaves us wondering what people in, say, Europe or other parts of Asia are supposed to do–which, many would argue, is precisely why so many people choose to get their anime and manga from illegal sources to begin with…

That little hiccup aside, if you’d like to pledge never to access manga or anime through unofficial channels, you can do so here. If you don’t really care about piracy, but just really want that snazzy special illustration, you can still do so here and just feel like a horrible hypocrite by “joining” just to get the illustration. Remember, Santa Claus is watching!

Fully posable “Titan Eren” figure to debut next year, looks just as nude/terrifying as expected

titan 1

If the thought of being able to have your way, in a manner of speaking, with Attack on Titan‘s Eren — albeit in titan form — is appealing to you, then this item may be for you! That’s right, folks, Japanese toy maker Kotobukiya is set to launch a figure of the series’ protagonist Eren Yeager in gruesome titan form, complete with changeable heads!

Join us after the jump for a closer look at this undeniably creepy, yet expertly crafted figure!

Due to be released next February by Kotobukiya, a company known for their figures and plastic models, Titan Eren has fully movable joints so you’ll be able to make the figure strike just about any pose you like.

▼See Eren the titan in all his glory, standing 16cm (approx. 6&1/3 in) tall. Okay, so maybe he isn’t exactly titan size …titan 3

▼… but he’s still recreated in magnificent detail, regardless of what angle you look at him from. The musculature is impressive to say the least.
titan 4

▼You can move his legs and arms to create your favorite pose with him. (Note that the stand shown below is sold separately.)titan 6

▼Here he looks ready to make some serious karate moves.
titan 7

▼Wow, look at him run!titan 8

▼See how flexible his joints are. He really can assume a wide range of positions.
titan 9

▼As already mentioned, the figure comes with two different heads. This is the head that we might call the “roaring” version, as opposed to the one with a more regular expression shown in the first few pictures above.
titan 10

▼Yes, you can almost hear him roar!titan 11

Well, we think the figure looks pretty cool, and we can easily imagine fans of the series seriously wanting one of these. They’re now taking pre-orders for the figure on the Kotobukiya Online Shop at a price of 4,968 yen (US$45.92) and the actual product will become available sometime in February next year. Unfortunately, Kotobukiya don’t ship overseas, so if you really must have a Titan Eren you’ll have to have someone in Japan order for you, or pester your favorite importer to get some in stock.

Spider-Man vs. Attack on Titan?! Marvel announces crossover with anime/manga megahit

KM 1

While U.S.-produced comics lag far beyond domestic titles in popularity in Japan, the recent string of high-profile live-action Marvel movies seem to be slowly building a fan base for their American icons. At this year’s Kawasaki Halloween festivities, for example, you could spot Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Loki, and multiple Spider-Men marching in the same costume parade as characters from Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, and Attack on Titan.

The sight of so many different heroes together was enough to set the mind racing at the storytelling possibilities. But while the Sailor Scouts won’t be coordinating operations with the Avengers anytime soon, and the question of “Could Wolverine beat up Goku?” is going to have to remain a debate for our planet’s brightest intellectual luminaries, the worlds of American and Japanese are indeed set to collide, with an official crossover between Marvel Comics and Attack on Titan.

Marvel has actually been dipping its toes into the anime world for a while. In 2010, the publisher teamed up with Madhouse, the Japanese animation studio responsible for beloved anime such as Trigun, Wolf Children, Record of Lodoss War, and Cardcaptor Sakura. While Japanese studios doing animation production for U.S. properties isn’t anything new (a surprising number of cartoons shown on American TV in the 1980s were produced in Japan), the resulting Marvel Anime series were different in that no effort at all was made to downplay its Japanese artistic sensibilities.

KM 2

After 2012’s The Avengers became a worldwide phenomena, Marvel decided to capitalize on the characters’ newfound fame with Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers. The kid-friendly series from Toei Animation, which also produces Sailor Moon, premiered last April and follows Earth’s mightiest heroes as they fight supervillains with the help of an international group of schoolchildren.

KM 3

Despite these Japanese influences and reimaginings, though, Marvel’s characters haven’t yet been portrayed fighting alongside, or against, preexisting anime or manga characters. That’s all about to change, though, and before you dismiss the idea of a Marvel/Attack on Titan crossover as a baseless rumor or fan fiction project, you should know the announcement comes straight from C.B. Cebulski, Marvel’s vice President of International Business Development and Brand Management.

Cubulski didn’t specify what exact form the crossover will take, but made it clear that it is really happening, and it’s only two weeks away.

That’s clearly our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, appearing in front of two not-so-friendly looking Titans in the teaser image. Since not all of the Titans have identical loyalties, there’s no way to tell if Spidey is fleeing as they try to make him their lunch, or if the Wall-Crawler and the wall-repulsed naked giants have joined forces against a powerful foe, who may or may not be wearing spandex and/or pants.

Thankfully, we’ve only got two weeks of waiting until we find out.

Life-size Attack on Titan statues coming soon to Universal Studios Japan

UC 4

Who does a 15-meter naked giant make marketing deals with? Anyone he wants, apparently.

Just days ago, we heard about the upcoming crossover between hit anime and manga Attack on Titan and Marvel Comics, which as of 2009 has been a subsidiary of Disney. Still, that isn’t stopping the Titans from playing both sides of the fence, as Tokyo Disneyland’s major theme park rival has just announced that two life-size Titan statues are coming to Universal Studios Japan.

Back in the summer, USJ (as the hip Japanese kids call it) announced its Universal Cool Japan project, which promised an array of attractions based on Japanese video game and anime franchises.

UC 3

The four series to get the nod were Capcom’s Biohazard/Resident Evil and Monster Hunter, Gainax’s Evangelion, and creator Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan. So we knew something special was coming, but still, we didn’t expect it to be this literally big.

In addition to the walk-through escape game USJ spoke of last month, Universal Cool Japan’s Attack on Titan-The Real area will house a full-size, 15-meter (49-foot) recreation of character Eren’s Titan form. Fans will also get a chance to see/be terrified by a 14-meter tall statue of the Female Titan which serves as the primary antagonist for the second half of Attack on Titan’s current batch of anime episodes.

UC 1

USJ has also revealed that part of the Evangelion exhibit will be the Evangelion-The Real 4-D motion theater. The designers’ definition of the fourth dimension seems to be the gusts of wind and sprays of water viewers will be hit with while watching the attraction’s new story.

▼ At least, we hope it’s water.

TA 4

Fans of Japanese manga and American comics alike have spent the past few weeks wondering what exactly the upcoming crossover between Attack on Titan and Marvel has in store for us. Spider-Man and the Survey Corps exchanging tips over the best ways to zip around cityscapes? Deadpool and Levi fighting side by side with a combined four blades, as the merc cracks wise and the manga heartthrob sighs in annoyance?

Actually, we’re getting a fight between Earth’s mightiest heroes and anime’s tallest pantless woman, as Marvel has announced the project is titled Attack on Avengers.

It’s hard to imagine now, but you don’t even have to go back a full ten years to get to a point where nobody knew about Attack on Titan and nobody outside of hardcore comic fans cared about the Avengers. Hajime Isayama started his phenomenally successful serialized manga in 2009, and it was only a year earlier that Robert Downey, Jr. made Iron Man, until then a decidedly B-rank member of the Marvel Universe, modern and cool enough to pave the way for Thor, Captain America, and then the assembled Avengers to get their own movies.

▼ No one completely forgave The Hulk until he punched out that giant alien ship in The Avengers.

TA 2

Now, though, the Avengers and Attack of Titan are pretty much the reigning champions of pop culture on their respective sides of the Pacific. Since Marvel is bringing out a band of heroes for the crossover, Attack on Titan is countering with the anime’s most formidable adversary to date, the ferocious Female Titan.

▼ Seen here in a pensive pause between killing people.

TA 3

Since Isayama plays things very close to the chest regarding Attack on Titan’s mysterious setting, the Avengers will be the home team, as the story sees them rumbling with the kickboxing giant in New York.

Marvel shared the details in the newest issue of Japanese lifestyle magazine Brutus. Also included in the publication’s special Attack on Titan feature were sketches from Isayama’s previous works and a psychiatric analysis of the themes in his runaway hit. Isayama also drew the issue’s cover, which shows the Survey Corps relaxing in Ueno Park while dressed in school uniforms.

▼ Wait, is that skirt-wearing figure on the far right Krista, or Armin?

TA 1

The setting is a nod to the site of the Attack on Titan art exhibition, which opens November 28 at the Ueno Mori Art Museum.

Hmm…between Ueno, Osaka, and now New York, the Titans sure are doing a lot of traveling these days. Must be hard finding hotels with long enough beds.

The Attack on Titan and Marvel crossover comic that Magazine House‘s Brutus magazine is publishing on Saturday features characters from Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers as they battle the Female Titan, Colossal Titan, Armored Titan, and others in New York City.

aot-marvel

The crossover features English dialogue, but includes a Japanese translation guide. Original manga creator Hajime Isayama himself created the plot for the comic.

The comic is titled Attack on Avengers, and the full staff lineup includes:

Scenario: Hajime Isayama
Breakdown: C.B. Cebulski
Line Artist: Gerardo Sandoval
Color Artist: Dono Sanchez Almara
Assistant Editor: Jake Thomas
Editor: Tom Brevoort
Editor in Chief: Axel Alonso
Chief Creative Officer: Joe Quesada
Publisher: Dan Buckley
Executive Producer: Alan Fine

The issue also includes a short discussion with Marvel Comics Senior Vice President of Creative & Creator Development C.B. Cebulski titled “The Boom Has Landed in America. The Reason Is Because Americans Are Becoming Prisoners” that discusses Attack on Titan‘s popularity in America. Cebulski introduces the English phrase “Nothing Sacred” when discussing how major characters in the series will suddenly die. He also talks about how today’s youth in America live in uneasy times, with metal detectors at the entrances to high schools and children being banned from playing outside. He said people can feel like they are living within walled confines, and so perhaps American youths can emotionally invest in Eren and his friends’ fight with the Titans beyond the walls.

The same issue of Brutus features a cover drawn by Isayama, as well as an interview with Isayama, and a preview of the upcoming Attack on Titan art exhibit.

Titan mascot turns up for work in Tokyo bookstore, grosses everyone out

Picture the scene: “Hey, Suzuki-san, we’ve got a special job for you! Inside this box is a Mini Titan costume. This week, you’re going to go around the big anime and manga shops in Tokyo promoting the new Attack on Titan exhibition.”

Suzuki-san runs to the box containing the costume and rips it open excitedly. His face falls…for the creature he finds within is the oddest, ugliest Titan the world has ever seen.

Despite the name, the so-called Mini Titan is pretty big really; taller than this cuddly member of the Survey Corps anyway:

▼ “Putting in an appearance at Animate Ikebukuro. Immediately Mini Titan looks like he’s about to start a fight!”

He wasn’t doing much work though.

▼ “Mini Titan turned up at Sanseido book store…He’s not helping at all though.”

▼ “At Adores Sunshine. He’s playing on the crane game.”

Mini Titan is promoting the Attack on Titan exhibition at the Ueno Royal Museum in Tokyo, which opens Friday, November 28.

▼ “I went to pay for my stuff, but Mini Titan just threw a load of exhibition flyers at me instead.”

Which leaves us with just one question: isn’t a mini giant humanoid the same thing as…a human?

Live-action Attack on Titan posters show new characters and weapons, plus one huge absence

AT 0

It’s a big month for Attack on Titan. Between an art exhibit opening in Tokyo, a crossover with Marvel’s Avengers, and at least one of the naked giants finding a proper job, the biggest anime and manga hit of the last decade is even more in the spotlight than usual these days, which makes it only fitting that we’re getting our first in-costume glimpse of the cast of next summer’s live-action Attack on Titan movies.

Leading trio Eren, Mikasa, and Arumin are all present and accounted for. But while they’ll be joined by several new characters specially crafted for the films, one fan favorite apparently isn’t making the transition to live-action.

Thanks to Attack on Titan’s gritty, somber design aesthetic, the characters don’t have the sort of neon hair colors and outlandish outfits that many other anime casts do. Most members of the Survey Corps even have relatively realistic figures, salacious Mikasa fanart notwithstanding.

Nevertheless, live-action Attack on Titan producer Yoshihiro Sato explained that the production team “didn’t concern ourselves at all with whether or not the actors looked like their manga counterparts.” Instead, after several talks with series creator Hajime Isayama, Sato “carried out casting on the basis of whether or not the actors could embody the spirit of Isayama’s originals.”

Still, we don’t think fans will have too much trouble telling who’re supposed to be Eren and Mikasa, played by Haruma Miura and Kiko Mizuhara, respectively.

AT 1

AT 3

Armin (Kanata Hongo) is a little harder to recognize without his blond hair, but he’s still got his bowl-cut, and, in this version at least, he’s clearly a guy.

AT 4

Attack on Titan has a lengthy list of characters, due to its complex plot and high body count. As a result, it doesn’t look like everyone from the manga will be showing up, but there’s going to be at least some screen time for the conflicted Jean (Takahiro Miura).

AT 5

As with any adaptation, a few tweaks are expected to make the story fit its new format, and also to make things more accessible for viewers who aren’t already long-time fans of the franchise. With most movies running about an hour-and-a-half, the live-action Attack on Titan is going to have to introduce its sizeable cast at a pretty rapid rate. Since everyone wears a nearly identical outfit, there’s a chance of first-time viewers getting confused as to who’s who, which might be why not all of the Survey Corps are making the series’ iconic twin swords their weapon of choice.

▼ To be fair, Satomi Ishihara’s Hans/Hange is the sort of nut-job we’d expect to form an emotional bond with her rocket launcher.

AT 12

▼ Potato-loving, meat-stealing, always-hungry Sasha (Nanami Sakuraba), looking just a little bit like a certain Hunger Games character

AT 6

In addition to these six familiar heroes, seven new characters have also been announced. This isn’t a case of the production team riding roughshod over Isayama’s established work, either. Isayama himself was involved with constructing the film’s story alongside director Shinji Higuchi, which is described as a hybrid of existing ideas and new elements.

While the Attack on Titan manga and anime both emphasize that Mikasa is one of the setting’s few Asian equivalents, several of the new characters have decidedly Japanese-sounding names.

Fukushi (Shu Watanabe), “guardian of sorrow”

AT 8

▼ The motherly Hiana (Ayame Misaki)

AT 9

▼ “Gentle warrior” Sannagi (Satoru Matsuo), who also bypasses the standard paired blades

AT 7

Lil (Rina Takeda), dubbed “love of hell” on her poster, but described in press releases as someone who “survives for love.”

AT 10

▼ Thanks to his jet-black uniform and riding crop, Kubal (Jun Kunimura) would seem sinister enough without his title of “perfect darkness.”

AT 13

Some of the new roles seem to be inspired by manga characters who won’t be appearing in the films. For example, Pierre Taki’s heavy-hearted commander Souda (less eloquently referred to as “Captain Sad” on his poster), seems like a stand-in for the anime heroes’ mentors Pixis and Erwin.

AT 11

By this point, though, you’re probably wondering who’s playing Levi, Attack on Titan’s supremely cool giant slayer who steals every single scene he’s in. The answer?

Nobody.

Levi’s spot in the lineup seems to have instead been claimed by newcomer Shikishima, billed as humanity’s strongest warrior and played by Hiroki Hasegawa.

AT 2

But why would Isayama and Higuchi elect not to bring Attack on Titan’s most popular male character, by far, along on the franchise’s trip to live-action? We’re not sure. Isayama’s manga is nothing if not unpredictable, and maybe he’s got some shocking plot twist coming that he doesn’t want spoiled by the greater pressure to tell a complete story the two-part live-action adaptation is likely to have.

Or maybe, just maybe, it’s that no one is cool enough to play Levi in real life.

Finally! Attack on Titan director says TV anime’s second season will start production in 2016

TT 1

I recently compared Attack on Titan to an 800-pound gorilla, since the smash hit anime has become so big and powerful it can do whatever it wants, such as actively forming partnerships with both Universal Studios and rival Marvel/Disney. But maybe the better analogy is to a cow.

Since the end of its broadcast run in September of 2013, the franchise has been spun off into side-story manga, novels, compilation movies, and live-action adaptations. For the most part, fans have happily lapped up the comparatively delicious offerings of all this milking, but what everyone has really been waiting for is some sort of timetable for a continuation of the anime TV series itself.

Thanks to its director, we finally have one.

While the wait for more Attack on Titan episodes has no doubt been excruciating for diehard fans, this sort of stop-and-go production schedule has become the norm for anime over the past decade. As a matter of fact, Attack on Titan getting 25 episodes right out of the gate was a pretty bold decision. 13 episodes has become the standard for new anime properties, and even with Attack on Titan’s double-long first season, the industry generally dictates a subsequent breather period in which DVD and Blu-ray releases, plus merchandising, are handled.

The first of the two animated Attack on Titan compilation films was released over the recent three-day weekend in Japan. On November 22, opening day, a fan event was held at the Wald 9 theater in Tokyo’s Shinjuku. Appearing in costume were voice actors Yuki Kaiji, Yui Ishikawa, and Marina Inoue, who portray the central trio of Eren, Mikasa, and Arumin, respectively. They were joined by a 1:100 scale model of the head of the 50-meter (164-foot) Colossal Titan and Attack on Titan TV series and anime movie director Tetsuro Araki.

TT 2

While Araki brought the least visual appeal to the event, he had by far the most interesting thing to say. The director revealed that the second round of Attack on Titan TV episodes will go into production in 2016, and sounds like he’s as psyched as the series’ fans, judging from this comment he made:

“I’m looking forward to the new episodes too. Let’s do this!”

Unfortunately, there’s no firm premiere date yet set for Attack on Titan Season Two. TV anime production isn’t known particularly long production lead times, though, so in all likelihood if the episodes go into actual production in 2016, they’ll start airing that same year. This still means that you’re looking at a 14-month wait, at the shortest, before your first chance to watch the new episodes, but at least you’ve got a couple of movies to keep yourself occupied with while you’re killing time.

Just a dud batch? Original artist shocked by shoddy final version of Attack on Titan figure

$

levi

Have you ever ordered a product online that turned out to be nothing like how it looked in the photo? You feel disappointed, annoyed, and slightly betrayed. It’s probably the same kind of feeling an artist gets when a product based on their designs doesn’t turn out quite like they expected.

When it comes to large anime franchises the original creator may be the one who gets all the credit, but they’re not necessarily the one who does all the work. They have teams of designers and illustrators working with them who will oversee things such as promotional material, images for magazines, merchandise, and so on. These people have a responsibility to make sure everything is in-keeping with the creator’s vision. Twitter user Yuna is one such illustrator who has done work for many famous anime, games, and other otakuish things.

Unfortunately, not everyone is so serious about fidelity to a series. Yuna was in charge of the original illustration work for a figure of hit anime Attack on Titan‘s (Shingeki no Kyojin) Corporal Levi. Unfortunately the finished model based on Yuna’s designs was quite different from what was expected.

And this isn’t just a case of changes being made further on down the line and not being communicated back. Apparently Yuna was actually sent a photo of the final figure for approval and gave the go ahead. However, when the figure arrived, something was very off. You could blame differences in positioning and lighting, but when you look closely at the eyes, which are one of the most important things in any anime character, they give a completely different impression from the original.

“Regarding the figure design I was in charge of, I got a call that the face was completely different. The image on the left was sent to me for quality checking so I replied with the OK, the figure that arrived on release day is on the right. Honestly, I’m shocked.”

Yuna has over 40,000 followers who are always eager to see what the artist has been working on, and so feels a sense of responsibility for encouraging them to buy a product that turned out so poorly. And so the artist took to Twitter to voice their disappointment.

“I was really happy to hear ‘I ordered it!’ and ‘I can’t wait!’ from my followers since I made announcements about it thinking it would be the quality shown on the left, but now it’s arrived… I don’t know what to say…”

Naturally people were shocked by the difference in quality, but they didn’t blame Yuna.

“It’s so bad you’d think it was a knockoff lololol”

“It’s not Yuna’s fault… this is all the producer’s fault… I was shocked to see the photo. I can’t believe this happened.”

“Sorry to butt in, but I saw this figure too when I was shopping in Nihonbashi. But I think the one I saw was the better one (on the left) that Yuna gave the OK to.”

“I saw the one on the left in Lashinbang, but I guess then this happened… it’s shocking…”

From the above comments it seems likely that there was a dud batch that sneaked through quality control. We’re sure the issue will be resolved soon as it can’t be good for the producers to have their artist publicly lambasting them in front of the people who would be buying their products!

▼ A compilation video of Corporal Levi’s badassery so you can see his usual expression. Admittedly it is a unique character design, but that’s all the more reason to get it perfect.

What do you think? Would you return this figure if you received it in the mail? Let us know in the comments section below.

Hajime Isayama drew the Attack on Titan voice cast as their characters

After a stage event, voice actress Marina Inoue snapped the ultimate selfie, one that included herself, fellow Attack on Titan actors Yui Ishikawa (Mikasa Ackerman) and Yuuki Kaji (Eren Jaeger), and series director Tetsuro Araki. While the picture itself is already pretty cool, Attack on Titan mangaka Hajime Isayama took it one step further, drawing the cast as their respective characters, along with a manga-fied version of Araki.

As for the guy in the back, it’s producer Tetsuya Kinoshita.

Isayama later went back and redrew the illustration, posting the finished results on his blog, adding that he wanted to spend a little more time on it because it was fun drawing the characters with out-of-character expressions and poses.

Attack on Titan teas are selling out faster than a giant can eat a human

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but there’s this anime (and manga) called Attack on Titan… Who are we kidding? Of course you’ve heard! After sharply rising to popularity with the release of the anime in spring 2013, this post-apocalyptic story, featuring man-eating giants and tree-swinging military characters, has been everywhere from iPhone cases to bananas, even joining in collaborations with Marvel and Universal Studios Japan.

When the directors of Mori Art Museum in Ueno were thinking about what kind of special goods they wanted to sell along with their Attack on Titan exhibit, they thought, “Well, why don’t we team up with a top-line tea maker like Lupicia?” Because dainty tea is the obvious first choice to pair with a dark fantasy. Low and behold, the Attack on Titan blended teas have been selling out faster than any other product in the gift shop.

The Attack on Titan themed tea comes in three different flavors, each designed to help you be brave, intelligent or calm, like the character Levi. At first I thought it kind of weird, focusing all the teas on only Levi’s attributes, but as he is “humanity’s most powerful soldier,” I guess that’s not such a bad decision.

▼ The brave, intelligent and calm Levi Ackerman.

Levi_in_anime

The packaging is also very well done (sans the Engrish), keeping in tune with the old-school German theme of the show. Without reading the words, you’d probably never assume that it was related in any way to giants.

▼ Try not too focus too much on “Brend.”

blue

So now the flavors:

First we have Brave Red, which is rooibos tea with apricot, plum and red safflower for extra red-orange color and, of course, bravery inducing flavor. It is said to emit the image of a soldier who fights whole-heartedly, but keeps his passion contained. Might be helpful to drink before you ask that girl out on a date.

▼ Brave Red tea and the brave man it’s fashioned after.

rooibos

Next is Intelligent Blue, a black tea featuring refreshing citrus and blue cornflower flavors. The taste is intended to make you one with Levi’s cool and collected wisdom. Perhaps a good one to drink before an exam.

Finally we have Calm Green, a blend of green tea rooibos, with hints of Muscat, green apple and wild strawberry leaf. It’s refreshing, sweet and a little fruity. According to some Twitter users, “it’s bittersweet but just the right balance.” A sip of this will make you feel like you are taking a little break with your Survey Corps, Special Operations teammates. How relaxing!

▼ The combination of green tea and rooibos makes a nice orange color.

green

While the teas sounds awfully appetizing and I would love to feel as brave, intelligent and calm as Levi, the only problem is that the gift shop keeps selling out of the teas! The exhibit opened on November 28 and was sold out of tea within two days. Good news though, starting on December 9, they got a new shipment, but now people are limited to three cans per person. If you do manage to get your hands on one, it will cost you 1,500 yen (US$12) for a can of seven tea bags.

▼ When you go to get your tea, maybe stop by the exhibit too…

mori

If the tea is selling so well, Lupicia should probably consider making it a normal product, I’m sure the convenience store Lawson would be on board to sell it, as they have already been taken over with Attack on Titan products. It sure would be nice to sip some Green Calm while anxiously awaiting the live action movie.
