You’ve come to the beach for a relaxing day in the sun, ready to kick back with a cold beer when all of a sudden.. a Colossal Titan appears!
Talented “sand artist” Toshihiko Hosaka has been sculpting the iconic Colossal Titan from Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) at Enoshima Beach to celebrate the release of the 11th volume of the popular manga on August 12.
Created by Hajime Isayama, the series is set in a world where the remnants of humanity are confined to walled cities, living in fear of the gigantic Titans roaming the earth outside. The appearance of the Colossal Titan marks the end of an era of relative stability, and the beginning of the war. With an anime adaptation currently airing, the series is hugely popular, combining powerful storytelling with an original plot, and a truly terrifying enemy on the form of the Titans.
It may come as quite a shock to some beach goers who are there for the sun, sea, and free-flowing alcohol, but whether you’re a fan of the series or not, it’s certainly impressive. The detail is incredible – just look at those teeth!
Using 80 tonnes of sand, once completed the sand statue will be 3 metres tall, 5.4 metres wide, and 4.2 metres deep. Sand art is created using nothing more than sand and water. It’s sand through and through, with no supports or other materials inside. The only addition is a fixing agent made of natural ingredients such as milk sprayed over the finished creation, so that it can stand up to a bit of rain.
Hosaka’s “Sand Giant” will be lit up and on display after its completion on August 9 until the 15th. Of course, sand art doesn’t hang around forever, so get on down to Enoshima while you can!
